Trump’s Unprecedented Grip on GOP Exposed by Historic Texas Senate Defeat

Political analyst Harry Enten has declared that President Donald Trump holds firm control over the Republican Party, citing a historic primary election loss for Texas Senator John Cornyn.

Enten noted that Trump’s decision to support Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over Cornyn resulted in one of the largest defeats for a Republican senator in modern history, with Cornyn losing by 28 percentage points.

“When a Republican goes up against Donald Trump or Donald Trump really goes up against them, it doesn’t end too well for that Republican senator,” Enten said.

The analyst described Cornyn’s loss as “historic to a degree that we have not seen since my mother was born.”

Enten also highlighted the collapse of Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy’s re-election campaign after Trump endorsed one of his rivals.

Additionally, Enten pointed out that Trump shifted from 45 points in net negative approval in 2015 to over 61 points positive approval today—a change of 100 points in the positive direction.

In contrast, former President George W. Bush’s net approval rating among Republicans dropped from 57% to just 17% according to Enten’s analysis.

“The George W. Bush era of the Republican Party is, simply put, it is dead,” Enten said. “This was the capstone to it. And Donald Trump’s Republican Party is very much alive.”

Enten concluded: “Donald Trump, it’s his party across the political map, even in George W. Bush’s backyard.”
