Two men in Memphis violently assaulted a man inside an apartment last week before being met with a deadly counter-attack. According to police reports, the incident occurred around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday near Madewell Street.
Devonta Johnson and Zarian Sanders entered the apartment to locate the mother of Johnson’s child. They forcibly kicked in the front door, which had been barricaded with a couch. Police stated the men then moved into a bedroom where they began beating a male victim. During the altercation, Johnson drew a handgun, triggering a struggle over the weapon that culminated in the victim shooting and killing Johnson.
After the shooting, Sanders threatened the victim with a rifle, seized the firearm from Johnson’s possession, and fled the scene before being apprehended. Sanders was later booked on charges of especially aggravated burglary, convicted felon in possession of a handgun, aggravated assault, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. Authorities identified Sanders as a 23-year-old individual previously convicted last September for theft of a firearm valued under $2,500.
