A narrator states, “It was at this moment he knew he screwed up,” at the beginning of a Vancouver, Washington police bodycam video showing a suspect falling from the ceiling of a local department store late last month.
Police responded on September 30 to the Vancouver Mall after employees reported that a male was crawling through the ceiling and breaking tiles. Officers repeatedly commanded the suspect to descend but he continued moving upward, damaging lights, wiring, and other fixtures.
The second floor was evacuated as officers and firefighters worked to get him down. After more than an hour of attempts to talk the suspect into coming down, police said he finally stepped onto a ladder placed in the ceiling. However, the suspect soon tried to climb back up — prompting officers to pull the ladder away.
Police reported that the suspect landed on a mattress placed for safety but immediately got up and attempted to flee. “That didn’t work out so well,” police noted.
Gabriel Hideo was taken into custody amid frequent growls as he resisted being handcuffed, according to the video.
The bodycam recording, which features A-ha’s “Take On Me” playing in the background, garnered online attention with hundreds of commenters joking about the bizarre arrest.
