Senate Leader Warns Young Conservatives: GOP Jobs Risk “A Ton of Problems”

U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) cautioned young conservatives at a University of Chicago event that taking government jobs under a Republican administration could result in “a ton of problems,” urging them to question whether joining such an administration would be advisable.

Slotkin characterized her call for future investigations into former Trump administration officials as accountability for corruption. However, she highlighted the implicit threat in her proposal: making public service under what she described as an incorrect president so daunting that talented conservatives would avoid government roles entirely. “Conservatives would be fools to ignore it,” Slotkin stated.

She warned that as political systems weaken, abandoning legitimate authority while opponents organize represents the most dangerous response. Historical disputes—including the Bush-Gore recount, birtherism, Russiagate, and battles over COVID-era voting rules—have eroded trust in the ability of defeated candidates to return for future elections.

Slotkin noted that when losing leads to permanent exclusion, financial ruin, or legal consequences, the incentive to win at any cost overwhelms the willingness to accept defeat. She emphasized that the ballot should determine officeholders—not which faction uses state power to erase rivals.
