California Redistricting Lawsuit Alleges Unconstitutional Racial Gerrymandering

A lawsuit has been filed against Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s redistricting plan following a decisive victory for Proposition 50 in California. The legal challenge argues that the map-drawing process violates the 14th and 15th Amendments by prioritizing race, particularly affecting Hispanic communities.

Proposition 50, backed by Newsom, was approved with 63.8% of voters supporting it, while 36.2% opposed. The measure aims to reshape congressional districts, potentially securing at least five additional Democratic seats in the U.S. House. The lawsuit seeks to halt implementation ahead of midterm elections, claiming the redistricting scheme is unconstitutional.

Newsom’s office dismissed the legal action, with a statement mocking the plaintiffs: “If it’s from the California Republican Party and Harmeet Dhillon’s law firm, it’s going to fail. Good luck, losers.” Attorney Mark Meuser responded, vowing to confront Newsom in federal court over “racial gerrymandering.”

Former President Donald Trump criticized the process, alleging it was “rigged” and targeting mail-in ballots, which he claimed disadvantaged Republicans. The proposition is seen by some as part of Newsom’s broader strategy for a 2028 presidential bid.
