MoveOn, a progressive organization backed by George Soros, has launched a petition condemning U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recruitment advertisements on Spotify as “offensive government propaganda.” The campaign, which criticizes the Trump administration’s efforts to expand ICE’s workforce, alleges the ads use “inflammatory and dehumanizing language” to recruit personnel for enforcing immigration laws.
The petition highlights that the ads are part of a broader government strategy across multiple platforms, including television, streaming services, and online channels. MoveOn argues the advertisements exploit Spotify’s user base, which pays for entertainment and connection, as a recruitment tool. “It’s intrusive, offensive, and disturbing,” the petition states.
Spotify has not directly addressed the specific ads but noted users can manage their ad experience through in-app preferences or web account settings. The petition does not name other streaming platforms, though it acknowledges free subscribers are the only ones affected by the advertisements. Paid subscribers, who do not encounter ads, remain unaffected.
As of the latest update, the petition has gathered 36,914 signatures, with a target of 40,000. MoveOn and the Department of Homeland Security have not responded to requests for comment.
