Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry is strongly opposing California Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision regarding the state’s proposed menopause care bill, citing it as a reason why he should not run for president.
Speaking at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit, Berry expressed her vehement disagreement with Newsom’s veto of the Menopause Care Equity Act (AB 432). The 59-year-old actress has become an advocate for expanding health care options specifically for women experiencing menopause. She criticized Newsom’s stance directly.
“Back in my great state of California, my very own governor, Gavin Newsom, has vetoed our menopause bill, not one, but two years in a row,” Berry stated during her address.
Her comments further extended to the political arena: “And with the way he’s overlooked women… probably should not be our next president either. Just saying.”
Berry also took the opportunity to endorse Kamala Harris for president in 2024, linking Newsom’s actions to the presidential debate as part of her critique.
When asked about the decision shortly after Berry spoke, Newsom argued that the bill was too broad and potentially burdensome on health plans, stating it would “limit the ability of health plans to engage in practices that have been shown to ensure appropriate care while limiting unnecessary costs.” He suggested a more tailored solution but maintained his position against the current proposal.
Video recordings of Berry’s powerful remarks were subsequently shared online.
