At the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, South Carolina, inmates will have to stick with their regular cafeteria meals this week after officials intercepted a drone delivery carrying ingredients for an “early holiday Old Bay crab boil and steak dinner.” The package also contained cigarettes and two large bags of marijuana.
Officials recovered the drone along with the contraband at the maximum security prison. No arrests have been made.
SCDC spokeswoman Chrysti Shain described the items as unusual, stating: “I’m guessing the inmates who were expecting this package are a bit crabby.” She added that while contraband packages often include odd items, this was particularly unusual for the state’s corrections department.
Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon previously noted in a 2022 statement that large drones can carry heavier packages and that authorities work to prevent them from reaching inmates. The Lee Correctional Institution has been a site of ongoing efforts to combat drone deliveries of contraband, including drugs like fentanyl and meth.
