Police are still searching for the shooter who attacked Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island Saturday afternoon, described as a man dressed in black. At least two people were killed and several others wounded during the incident near the Barus and Holley engineering building on Hope Street.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated that doors to the engineering building were unlocked due to final exams being held there, allowing anyone access. Fire Chief Derek Silva confirmed two shooting victims were found dead at the scene.
Eight other individuals were treated at Rhode Island Hospital after the attack, with six in critical but stable condition, one in critical condition, and one in stable condition. Later updates revealed a ninth injured person with non-life-threatening injuries from gunshot fragments.
Brown University officials declared the campus remained under lockdown by 8:30 p.m., urging all community members to shelter in place. Providence Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara indicated police are searching for a single gunman, though no weapon has been recovered or identified.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee reported speaking with FBI Director Kash Patel and emphasized that local, state, and federal authorities are united in their efforts to ensure safety and apprehend the attacker.
