Netflix’s ‘Steps’ Reimagines Cinderella with Stepsisters as Heroes, Sparking Outrage

Netflix has announced a new animated film titled “Steps,” which reimagines the classic fairy tale of Cinderella by portraying the evil stepsisters as protagonists and reversing the traditional narrative. The production will feature voices from comedienne Ali Wong and actress Stephanie Hsu.

Co-director Alyce Tzue explained the project’s intent: “I wanted to create a film for everyone who has ever felt like they didn’t belong — and show how a single act of kindness can change everything.”

The announcement has drawn significant backlash on social media, with critics arguing that the film downplays genuine evil by reclassifying villains as misunderstood characters. Many users condemned the approach as clichéd, lazy storytelling, and unoriginal, noting that subversion should serve as subtle seasoning rather than a primary narrative framework. The film, produced by actress Amy Poehler, is scheduled for release in 2026.
