A suspect allegedly banged on the windows of Padrón Elementary School in Austin and threatened to kill students, prompting Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott to demand legislative action against “progressive” district attorneys.
According to an Austin Justice watchdog group, Michael Nnaji was arrested over 34 cases since 2019 but released on bond or had charges reduced by prosecutors. Nnaji reportedly screamed through locked glass doors of the school in October 2024: “I’m going to go inside and kill, I’m gonna find a way to get in.”
The suspect skipped court after being released on bond and later had charges dropped over a December 5 trespass at a gas station while fleeing justice for the school threat.
Abbott stated he would push legislation to create a Chief State Prosecutor to prosecute criminals like this that district attorneys in places such as Austin refuse to prosecute. He added: “Progressive DAs are literally leading to the murder of Texans.”
Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk endorsed Abbott’s proposal on social media, writing: “This is a great idea! I initially read this as ‘let’s prosecute DAs that refuse to prosecute,’ which is also a good idea.”
