Border Patrol Seizes 115-Gallon Methamphetamine Tank on California Highway

On September 29, U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped a northbound semitruck traveling on Interstate 15 in California at approximately 11 a.m.

During the stop, an agent from the Newton-Azrak Border Patrol Station and his K-9 partner detected characteristics of liquid methamphetamine in one of the fuel tanks. The hazardous response crew safely extracted the substance from the tank.

The seized liquid was determined to be 115 gallons, weighing approximately 962 pounds and testing positive for methamphetamine. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials estimated the street value of the narcotics at about $1 million.

Following the seizure, the semitruck was taken by Border Patrol, and a Mexican national was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.

“This massive seizure of liquid methamphetamine highlights the lengths these transnational criminal organizations will go to smuggle hard narcotics into our communities,” said Justin M. De La Torre, chief patrol agent for the San Diego sector of U.S. Border Patrol.
