A Slice of Pizza in Hurricane Harvey Led to a National Police Legacy

In 2017, as Hurricane Harvey battered Houston, three police officers reunited DJ Daniel and his brothers with their father after they had wandered into a shelter searching for snacks. The officers took them upstairs for pizza—a meal DJ still remembers fondly.

That small act of kindness inspired DJ to become a police officer so he could help others like those who had aided him during a frightening time.

Nearly a decade later, DJ has been sworn in by approximately 4,400 law enforcement agencies across the United States and abroad. In March 2025, President Donald Trump recognized him during an address to Congress when the Secret Service director appointed him as an honorary agent.

The journey of DJ Daniel inspired the children’s book “Special Agent DJ,” which highlights courage, family, service, and the lasting impact a single good deed can have on a child.
