Memphis Police responded to a break-in and shooting at the GreenBrook Apartments on Tuesday afternoon, according to WHBQ-TV. The incident occurred at the 6600 block of West Quailbrook Cove.
A homeowner told police he arrived just before 3:15 p.m. and saw a masked man attempting to take his television from a wall.
“The homeowner stated, ‘This is the direct result of what happens when the system to protect people fails completely. People take care of themselves. We’ve entered this phase,’” WHBQ-TV reported.
The suspect then turned toward the homeowner, reached into a bag, and pulled out a gun. The homeowner shot the suspect twice before he fled.
According to WHBQ-TV, the homeowner fired two additional shots as the suspect ran away. The suspect fell, dropped his bag, got back up, and continued running westward toward GreenBrook Bend.
Police said that when officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, he fled on foot within the apartment complex.
Officers conducted an extensive search and found a man injured in the 6400 block of Macon Road. The injured individual was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
In addition, police released to the homeowner’s wife a white PlayStation 5, pink and white Jordan 1 sneakers, black and pink Jordan 1 sneakers, all-black Nike Air Max 97 sneakers, white Air Force sneakers, a black Roku controller, and a purple PlayStation controller. The homeowner’s wife confirmed that all items belonged to the couple.
