Oklahoma City Police released video recorded around 8 a.m. on July 2 showing a suspect hurling a Molotov cocktail at a victim seated in a wheelchair—the incident unfolding “right across the street” from police headquarters.
In the footage, the perpetrator ignited and threw the explosive device directly at the victim, setting him ablaze. The video captures the victim wheeling himself away from the fire before the suspect appears to push him back into flames. Authorities stated that a quick-thinking bystander and two police detectives immediately rushed into danger to assist the victim and apprehend the suspect on the scene. Fire department personnel also arrived promptly to provide critical medical aid.
The victim, who is homeless, sustained minor injuries including burns on his neck and arms. He was treated at the scene but declined hospitalization and has not identified the attacker or their motivation for the assault. According to court documents, Alexander Emery, a 38-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history dating back approximately ten years, was the perpetrator. His charges include trespassing, burglary, drug offenses, breaking and entering, and assault—each with prior convictions. Authorities set his bond at $200,000.
Police reported that Emery was walking westbound on Main Street when he saw the victim crossing the street. He then turned, approached the victim, ignited a Molotov cocktail, and threw it directly toward him. The victim expressed gratitude for surviving the incident, stating he believes God was present during the harrowing event.
Meghan Mueller, president and CEO of the Homeless Alliance, described the video as “absolutely horrific” and emphasized that such an act should “shock the community.” She added: “These are people, these are our neighbors, these are our fellow Oklahomans. These are people with hopes and dreams, just like any of us.”
