Unprovoked Stabbing Kills 66-Year-Old Atlanta Grandmother on MARTA Train

Authorities confirmed an unprovoked stabbing attack on an Atlanta train over the weekend that killed a 66-year-old grandmother.

Arrest warrants indicate the victim, Margaret Swan, was stabbed 18 to 20 times while aboard a MARTA train Saturday.

“There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her family because her family is her everything.”

According to arrest warrants, John Elijah Matthews, a 25-year-old suspect, first cut Margaret Swan’s throat just seconds after he walked next to where she was seated on the train nearing the Oakland City MARTA station. Oakland City is an Atlanta neighborhood.

Video footage from inside the train shows that Swan sat alone at 11:21 a.m. and by approximately 11:25 a.m., Matthews was seen walking to her side of the train. The two never communicated during the incident.
