A hospice fraud problem is spiraling out of control in California, according to multiple federal investigations and reports.
In April, an investigation identified a “well-known” building in Los Angeles housing 89 licensed hospices. This complex included a hospice operator charged with six felony counts who allegedly illegally took $2.5 million from the federal government by using collective signatures of retirees to enroll them in hospice services.
The two-story Van Nuys facility billed more than $38 million to Medicare in 2023. Danny Mullen and his podcast co-host Leo Dottavio recently visited the building, finding it nearly vacant—nobody answering phones or responding to inquiries.
