President Donald Trump has announced that the White House Correspondents’ Dinner will now take place on July 24, moving it from its original April 25 date after an incident that ended the event abruptly.
Cole Allen, who was captured in the Washington Hilton lobby and charged with attempted assassination of a president and assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon, allegedly rushed through a security checkpoint at the event on April 25 and fired a shotgun. The Secret Service removed President Trump as a result.
In a Tuesday statement on Truth Social, Trump described the rescheduling as “a very good thing” because it prevents “Lunatics” from changing the way of life or its scheduling. He also confirmed he accepted an invitation from White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang to speak at the new date.
The rescheduled dinner will be held at the Waldorf Astoria on Pennsylvania Avenue, a venue Trump renovated during his private career before entering office and sold in 2021. Allen faces life in prison if convicted of the charges.
Trump stated he has not yet decided whether to deliver the “nasty statements” he had planned prior to the April 25 incident but called it a “HOT” ticket.
