Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom has enacted legislation imposing a 100% state tax on any funds received by Californians from President Donald Trump’s “anti-weaponization fund,” which critics claim was established to finance supporters of the January 6th Capitol riot.
In a statement released Tuesday, Newsom emphasized that taxpayer dollars should support victims rather than those who attacked law enforcement and democracy. He stated: “Taxpayer dollars should support victims, not the people who attacked law enforcement officers and our very democracy. We don’t fund criminals.”
The anti-weaponization fund emerged from Trump’s settlement in his lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service following leaks of his tax records. Critics argue it functions as a slush fund for individuals involved in January 6th events, while the administration has maintained it is designed to address legitimate concerns.
The fund remains legally contested, with some officials asserting it does not exist and will not be established, despite President Trump’s public statements indicating his intent to create it.
