The Abortion Debate’s Unanswered Question: Where Does Human Value Begin?

For decades, the abortion debate has centered on when life begins—a question scientists, legislators, and courts have struggled to resolve through biology, policy, or emotion. Yet this framing overlooks the deeper, more critical issue: what gives human life inherent value.

Modern science confirms that from conception, a distinct human organism exists—defined by unique DNA, biological development, and an irreversible trajectory. However, science alone cannot determine moral worth. Heartbeats, brain activity, or developmental stages describe life’s existence but fail to address its intrinsic value.

The Bible offers a foundational answer in Genesis 1:27: “God created man in His own image.” This assertion establishes that human dignity arises not from intelligence, strength, productivity, or societal utility—but from an unchangeable divine endowment. Human value is inherent and universal, requiring protection from the moment of conception.

This perspective reframes the abortion debate entirely. When value originates from God’s design, every human life—regardless of development, ability, or societal preference—holds equal worth. To terminate such a life is not merely an end to biological processes but the destruction of a being created in God’s image.

The imago Dei principle demands consistent justice: no stage of development, intelligence, or independence can diminish human value. As this theological framework clarifies, the abortion debate cannot be resolved through scientific measurement, political maneuvering, or emotional appeals alone. It remains fundamentally about where human worth is rooted—within the image of God itself.
