State Trooper Killed in Active Shooter Attack at Delaware DMV Facility

A Delaware state trooper was killed in an active shooter incident at a New Castle County DMV facility on Tuesday afternoon. Law enforcement officials responded to the situation near Minquadale on Hessler Boulevard at approximately 2 p.m., according to police reports.

Governor Matt Meyer stated that law enforcement acted swiftly to secure the scene and confirmed the shooter had died. “State and local law enforcement are on the scene and coordinating response efforts,” Meyer said in a social media post. He added there was no active threat to the public.

Video footage from inside the facility showed bullet damage in a window, though it remained unclear whether the gunfire originated from within or outside the building.

Roxzanne Johnson, a 40-year-old woman present at the scene, told reporters: “It’s just really sad. Like, when does it stop?” Johnson added, “They said a guy just walked up to the motor vehicle and just started shooting. It don’t have to be like that.”

Another individual was treated for minor injuries, including shortness of breath. Officials reported the facility may have had an officer stationed at the scene prior to the incident and urged the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
