Former President Joe Biden unexpectedly interrupted his wife, former first lady Jill Biden, during her recent publicity event for her memoir View from the East Wing. The incident occurred Tuesday when Biden shuffled out of his seat in the front row to address her while she was being interviewed by comedian Whoopi Goldberg.
Biden repeatedly stated: “My book … my book, which comes out in September, read it.” He was protected by security guards but did not have a microphone, leading many to believe the moment was unplanned.
Jill Biden quipped, “Joe has a question. Like you couldn’t ask it later?” before he asked her, “Who do you love most in the whole world?” While the audience laughed at her joke, Biden did not, and the uncomfortable exchange continued for several minutes.
“I love you most, Joe. Was that it? Was that the answer he wanted?” Jill Biden added.
Biden replied: “It’s overwhelming, isn’t it?”
Jill countered: “Overwhelming, well, that’s what keeps him on his toes. He’s never 100% sure. I always keep him guessing. Is that not true?”
Goldberg attempted to steer the conversation away from the odd interaction, but Biden pressed on until a staffer handed him a microphone.
“Do I have to remind him that this is my event?” Jill Biden joked.
Biden responded: “The only thing that Jill does better than write, she’s a beautiful woman.”
The former president has been out of public view since dropping out of his re-election campaign in July 2024 and handing over the Democratic nomination to Kamala Harris. He is also undergoing treatment for stage four prostate cancer, which was publicly disclosed in May 2025.
Jill Biden has faced criticism after admitting she was shocked by her husband’s condition during a June 2024 presidential debate against Donald Trump, an event that ultimately led to Biden withdrawing from the race.
“I was frightened because I had never, ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never,” Jill said.
“It scared me to death,” she added. “I don’t know what happened. As I watched it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke.’”
