A student at Rogers High School in Puyallup, Washington has filed a lawsuit claiming she was sexually assaulted by a transgender-identifying opponent during a December 2025 wrestling match.
According to the complaint, the student became distressed during the match and yelled for help from her mother. She later stated that the opponent engaged in sexual assault involving digital penetration of her vagina.
The lawsuit alleges the student was not informed she was competing against an athlete who identified as transgender and participated without this knowledge. The family claims school officials failed to report the incident to law enforcement for two months despite mandatory reporter laws requiring immediate reporting.
Pierce County prosecutors declined to prosecute the student due to insufficient evidence. The principal and athletic director of Rogers High School are facing separate charges for failing to report the incident within the required timeframe.
In court on Tuesday, attorneys representing the family—being advised by the Alliance Defending Freedom—sought an injunction to prevent the school from allowing female athletes to compete with biological males. Hal Frampton of the Alliance Defending Freedom stated: “The most important thing is that parents have a right to know if their child is going to be put in an unsafe situation, like being on a wrestling mat with a male athlete.”
The school district asserts officials acted in accordance with information available at the time and launched an investigation immediately upon learning of the incident. However, the lawsuit states: “Despite mandatory reporter laws, officials ignored the incident until it became a national news story weeks later. Even now, they refuse to take it seriously — to deal with the assault, to reserve girls sports for girls, or even to give parents the necessary notice so they can keep their daughters safe.”
