On June 16, just after 5 p.m., four San Antonio Police Department SWAT officers responded to an arrest warrant for Roman Pena, a 35-year-old man. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered Pena inside his parked vehicle where he was holding a firearm.
According to police reports, Pena began shooting at the officers as they approached. In response, all four officers fired multiple times during the confrontation. Both the suspect and one officer were struck by gunfire. Medical personnel transported both individuals to a hospital for treatment. Police confirmed no bystanders were injured.
Pena has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer. The San Antonio Police Department noted that the officers involved have eight to nine years of service, and that the department’s Shooting Team and Internal Affairs Unit are conducting separate investigations into the incident. Additionally, the District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the event as part of standard procedures for all officer-involved shootings.
