A Chesterfield County (S.C.) prison inmate handed a judge counterfeit cash to pay his trespassing bond and told him to “keep the change,” according to officials.
The incident involved Patrick Alexander, 33, of Mississippi, who was charged with trespassing. After a judge set a $250 bond for Alexander, he reportedly removed a bundle of money, sorted through it, and handed the judge three $100 bills.
Alexander then instructed the judge to “keep the change.” The judge noticed that the color of the bills appeared unusual and observed Chinese writing on their backs. A detention officer later confirmed with a counterfeit detection pen that the bills were fake. After learning they were counterfeit, Alexander was charged with forgery under South Carolina Code § 16-13-10.
A warrant was subsequently issued for Alexander’s arrest at the Chesterfield County Detention Center.
