Katie Zacharia, the nation’s newest White House press secretary, delivered a 14-minute briefing during her first media appearance on Tuesday. President Donald Trump praised her performance as he prepared to campaign for Republican candidates in Alaska.
In her opening remarks, Zacharia expressed gratitude to Trump: “Good morning. I am so honored to work for President Trump and the American people as the new White House press secretary.” She added that she had “wanted to work for him for a very long time” and highlighted the “energy and excitement never before seen in the history of midterms, thanks to President Trump.”
Zacharia also announced that Kimberly Guilfoyle had been asked to resign as U.S. ambassador to Greece following allegations of impropriety. “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” Zacharia stated. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.”
Guilfoyle confirmed her resignation on social media, denying accusations that she abused her office for personal gain: “I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice… I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service.”
When asked about Zacharia’s performance by a reporter, Trump responded: “I thought she did excellent. She did very good.” The president also endorsed Zacharia as the next press secretary after Karoline Leavitt joined Fox News, calling her “a devoted fan and member of MAGA” with an “unblemished record of support.”
Zacharia is the seventh woman in a row to head the White House press secretary office.
