Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s ‘Opening Silo’ Remark Undermines Southern Redistricting Call

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the U.S. House representative from New York and a socialist Democrat, made an embarrassing mistake during her Saturday speech in Montgomery, Alabama.

In remarks to supporters, Ocasio-Cortez stated: “What they thought was the final blow is actually just the opening silo.” The comment, which appeared to reference Civil War-era language, occurred as she criticized Republican-controlled states’ efforts to redraw legislative districts to gain an edge in the upcoming congressional midterm elections.

Ocasio-Cortez also addressed supporters by saying: “For all those watching today, when they ask, ‘What do we do in this moment? I feel helpless; what action can I take?'”

She concluded her speech with a call for mobilization: “It is time for the North to pull up to the South! It is time for New York to pull up to Alabama! It is time for all of us to come to Georgia, to Louisiana, to Tennessee, to Mississippi!”
