The WNBA’s Atlanta Dream hosted a Barbie Night on Monday to celebrate star player Angel Reese receiving her own doll. However, Reese’s pregame remarks quickly became the focus of attention, injecting unneeded political tensions into a league that could benefit from a much-needed break.
With her mini-me doll sitting at her table, Reese made a bold statement: “I didn’t have dolls that really look like me.”
Reporters asked questions to Reese ahead of the game. One journalist referred to the player as “Barbie” and inquired how it felt for Reese to be the first Atlanta-based athlete to have a doll modeled after her.
Reese responded: “It feels amazing. Being at the forefront always means a lot—especially considering there are many women who came before me.”
