Off-Duty Trooper Outsmarts Knife-Wielding Suspect During Yonkers Carjacking

Yonkers police reported that an off-duty New York State trooper thwarted a knife-wielding suspect’s carjacking attempt Sunday afternoon at a Mobil gas station in the city.

Around 12:45 p.m., the trooper was refueling her vehicle when a male approached with a knife, entered the driver’s seat, and attempted to drive away. The trooper, who was not unarmed while off-duty, fired one shot from her firearm as the suspect accelerated. The bullet struck the suspect in the left arm and passed into his torso.

The suspect drove through a shed and fence at the end of the gas station property before stopping in the parking lot of an adjacent apartment building at 1296 Midland Avenue. He fled on foot toward Midland Avenue but was quickly apprehended by Yonkers Police officers near 1328 Midland Avenue. Authorities recovered a knife from the suspect during his arrest.

The suspect, a 17-year-old Yonkers resident, was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and remains in stable condition. The suspect will be charged with robbery in the first, second, and third degrees, as well as fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree menacing. The Yonkers Police Department’s Detective Division Major Case Squad is leading the criminal investigation while the New York State Police conduct an internal review.

No identifying information about the trooper will be released beyond her status as a female off-duty state trooper assigned to Troop NYC.
