Democratic Rep. Linda Sanchez of California accused Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of corruption and complicity with what she described as Trump administration misconduct during a heated exchange at the conclusion of her remarks on Thursday’s House Ways and Means Committee hearing.
“The congresswoman is slanderous,” Bessent stated, adding he had “nothing but unsubstantiated opinions” and would not stand for such behavior.
Sanchez directly questioned Bessent about whether he had reviewed the decision granting President Trump and his family complete immunity from IRS audits. She asked: “Why are you allowing President Trump and his family to have complete immunity?”
Bessent responded that the U.S. Treasury and IRS are represented by the Justice Department and acting attorney general. Sanchez interrupted, accusing him of refusing to address questions about the immunity order.
